  • Coverage (0 to 5): Are you satisfied with the insurance coverage offered? Do you consider your belongings are adequately insured for various events? Are you satisfied with the available options?

North Carolina Biggest Home Insurance Cost Factors

Weather Risks

North Carolina’s location along the Atlantic coastline exposes it to a high risk of hurricanes, tropical storms, and flooding, particularly in the eastern coastal areas. Inland areas may also face severe thunderstorms, hail, and occasional tornadoes. These weather risks significantly influence premiums, especially in high-risk ZIP codes where insurers account for the potential for catastrophic claims. Homeowners in coastal counties often face separate hurricane deductibles and may need additional windstorm coverage.

Home Construction Age

The age of a home impacts insurance costs in North Carolina because older homes often have outdated wiring, plumbing, and roofing materials, which can lead to higher claim risks. In coastal or humid regions, older homes are more susceptible to mold, rot, and storm-related damage. Insurers typically offer lower premiums for newer homes due to improved building codes—especially post-2006 coastal construction standards designed to withstand high winds.

Home Age Typical Cost Change
0–5 years 15% to 25% less
6–10 years 15% to 5% less
11–20 years 0%
21–30 years 10% to 20% more
31–40 years 25% to 40% more
41–60 years 45% to 65% more
60+ years 70% to 100% more

In North Carolina, this ratio applies most strongly in coastal and flood-prone regions where maintenance challenges accelerate wear and tear. In mountain areas, older homes may fare better if they are well-maintained and built with durable local materials.

Credit Score Impact

In North Carolina, insurers can use credit-based insurance scores when determining premiums. Homeowners with higher credit scores are generally considered lower risk and receive better rates. Lower scores can result in significantly higher premiums, sometimes more than doubling the cost. This is because data shows a correlation between credit history and the likelihood of filing a claim.

Credit Score Typical Cost Change

Good 20% more
Average 40% more

North Carolina residents with average or poor credit scores should shop carefully and seek out insurers that place less weight on credit history, as there can be substantial differences between companies.

Location

Insurance costs vary greatly across North Carolina depending on location. Coastal counties like Dare and Carteret have the highest rates due to hurricane and windstorm exposure. Urban areas such as Charlotte and Raleigh may see higher costs due to property values and theft rates, while some inland rural areas benefit from lower premiums. Proximity to fire stations, fire hydrants, and local crime rates also influence costs.

How to Find the Best Cheap Home Insurance in NC

To find the most affordable rates, homeowners in North Carolina should compare quotes from at least three insurers, considering both large national companies and local or regional carriers. The cheapest option isn’t always the best, as it may exclude key coverage or have high deductibles. Focus on coverage for hurricane wind damage, flood risks (through a separate policy), and ensure replacement cost coverage is included.

What Does Home Insurance Cover in North Carolina?

Covered risks often include fire, windstorm, hail, theft, and vandalism. Flood and earthquake damage are not included and require separate policies.

Extra Coverage in North Carolina

Homeowners may add extra coverage such as flood insurance (critical for coastal and low-lying inland areas), windstorm endorsements, sewer backup protection, and extended replacement cost coverage. Extra coverage is recommended when your home is in a high-risk flood zone, near the coast, or in areas with outdated public infrastructure.
