Adapted housing grant programs related to veteran disables.

Specially Adapted Housing Grant (SAH)

This grant program is for Veterans with service-related disabilities who need to adapt their home in order to achieve a level of independence. This grant is generally provided to make a home wheelchair accessible. The maximum grant amount with this program is $50, 000.

Special Home Adaptations Grant (SHA)

The Special Home Adaptions Grant (SHA) is for veterans with service-related disabilities who need to make special adaptions to their homes. The purpose of this grant is to assist veterans with mobility issues in the home. The maximum grant amount for this program is $10,000.

Home Improvements and Special Alterations Grant (HISA)

The Home Improvements and Special Alterations Grant (HISA) is for veterans with service and non-service related disabilities who need to make special need-based alterations to the home. Veterans can receive a HISA grant in combination with a SHA or SAH grant. A medical determination is needed for approval of a HISA grant. Veterans with service-related disabilities can receive a HISA grant up to $4100.00. Veterans with non-service related disabilities can receive a HISA grant up to $1200.00.

Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA)

For returnees and veterans who do not own a house and are currently or plan on living in the home of a family member during their recovery. Up to $14,000 is available. Unless otherwise extended by Congress the TRA grant will expire June 15, 2010.

Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI)

Pays up to $90,000 of mortgage for severely disables veterans and service members in the event of death.
Eligibility is reserved to only veterans and service members who have received a Specially Adapted Housing Grant (SAH) from the VA.

Application Details:

To apply for an SHA or a SAH grant, you can complete VA form 26-4555 (Veterans Application for Aquiring Specially Adapted Housing or Special Home Adaption Grant) and submit it to your local VA regional office

To apply for a HISA grant, you can complete VA form 10-0103(Veterans Application for Assistance in Acquiring Home Improvement and Structural Alterations) and submit it to your local VA regional office.
