What is Kiva?

Kiva is a 501 non-profit organization based in San Francisco. Kiva is an online lending micro-lending platform where individuals can loan to entrepreneurs around the globe. Kiva in partnership with existing microfinance companies choose qualified entrepreneurs from underrepresented and impoverished communities. The goal of Kiva is to empower entrepreneurs to create businesses that will benefit their families and communities.

How does Kiva work?

Individual lenders make loans using paypal or a credit card. The loans go to Kiva’s microfinance partners who in turn transfer the funds to their screened entrepreneurs. Kiva’s microfinance partners offer training and counseling to entrepreneurs to increase their chances of success.

The lender can track repayment of their loan and get updates. Lenders have the option of receiving e-mails about the loan’s status. Once the loan is repaid, the money can be lent to other entrepreneurs. Since 2005, Kiva has distributed over $71,200,000 in loans from over 486, 000 lenders. It’s current repayment rate is 98.18%.
